Kult Heretic Kingdoms crash fix with MS ACT

I tried this game today and found that it immediately crashed when run.

On the official forums it was suggested to run the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode.  I’ve found that doing so is typically a double-edged sword as was the case with Kult Heretic Kingoms.  On one hand, the game required either EmulateHeap or HeapValidateFrees.  On the other hand, IgnoreScheduler, which is applied along with 30 other unnecessary fixes, causes the game to play at about 1 Frame Per Second (FPS).

The solution is to use the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit to create a fix using Windows 98 compatibility mode as a base for which we will deselect fixes until we find just the one we need.  Don’t get me wrong, right-clicking the .exe and using a compatibility mode is an excellent way to sort out which “bucket” of fixes we need to use as our base, and it’s a quick way to do so.

Of course there will be times when more than one fix is required, but my experience is that it’s usually not more than three to get a game working.
